LESBIANS ON THE LOOSE

SEPTEMBER 1992 ISSUE 33

VOL. NO.

FREE

SURVEY REVEALS

WIDESPREAD DISCRIMINATION

by Frances Rand

survey on lesbian discrimination

has been submitted to the NSW

Law Commission's enquiry into

the operation of the Anti-Discrimination

Act. Conducted by Christine Bird for

Visible Community Education the survey

reveals high incidence's of direct and

indirect discrimination.

One hundred women responded to the

survey distributed through the Mountain

Women's Newsletter, Feminist

Bookshop, The Bookshop Newtown and

rural lesbian organisations. Lesbians from

variety of backgrounds were

represented and verbal abuse was the

most common form of direct

discrimination experienced. Over 70% of

women had been harassed and comments

included being called "fucking lesbian"

outside their place of work, being stared

at and insulted by local boys, and being

threatened when coming out.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Sexual harassment was the next most

common form of discrimination with 34

responses. One woman said she was

molested by doctor in front of her

girlfriend. 32 women had had their career

prospects affected. One women was

sacked after appearing on TV talking

about her sexuality. Health care

discrimination was more common

among rural women and had affected 30

women with experiences ranging from

being denied access to donor

insemination to being told by counsellor

that it was "sinful" to be lesbian. 19

women had been physically attacked

because of their homosexuality and

reported being kicked and hit. Christine

reports that physical attacks were more

common in the 16-21 age group and

amongst those earning under $lO,OOO.

INDIRECT DISCRIMINATION

Indirect discrimination was felt more

than direct discrimination by all

...Cont. p.

CAROLE RUTHCHILD RETIRES

The female co-convenor of the Gay

and Lesbian Rights Lobby for the

past three years, Carole Ruthchild,

has stepped down. The period of her

involvement has been one of great growth

for the Lobby, in which it developed new

offshoots (Legal Rights Service, Gay and

Lesbian Teachers Assoc., Anti-Violence

Project, Gays and Lesbians Against

Racism) found premises and helped to

make lesbian and gay issues part of the

political agenda. The Lobby also became

the main agency the media contacted

when looking for comments on lesbian

and gay issues. Carole often acted as

spokesperson for the community and

became very visible lesbian. She sees

her visibility as strength of coalition

politics, "having co-convenors means

always having lesbian spokesperson."

Although the Lobby's impact has been

felt in many areas and with many issues,

education, the Armed Forces, law reform

are some, Carole finds it most rewarding

that violence against lesbians and gays

has been put on the political agenda.

Although the Anti-Violence Project, has

been perceived as mainly about gay men,

it has also been active in the area of anti-

lesbian violence. The AVP will launch

"Off Our Backs", study into anti-lesbian

violence on September 6.

Carole has found working with the Lobby

both exciting and satisfying and has

mixed feelings about leaving. She'll miss

the Lobby but feels it's positive step to

have new co-convenor.

Carole has had long

background in

feminist and gay and

lesbian politics.

Before she came to

Australia (she joined

the Lobby five

months after her

arrival) she had been

involved, at different

times, in Rape Crisis

Centre, Lesbian and

Gay Line and

Women's Liberation

Newsletter, in her

former home in

England. Carole still plans to be involved

with the Lobby, via the Anti-Violence

Project, and has no intention of staying

out of politics in the future. In the

meantime though she plans to do some

Australian lesbian history research.

Carole has been talking about this for

years and now she finally has the time.

She hopes to have her work published.

Fiances Rand

Deborah Taylor, Carole's successor,

interviewed on page 18.
