The only land in the vast expanse of tempestuous seas, South Georgia is the homing place of sea birds, penguins and seals. The Clapmatch or fur seal has long been exterminated but sea elephants are plentiful and make rookeries in secluded spots among the tussock grasses, where they breed, sleep, snore and grunt incessantly. Among the many varieties of penguins nesting at Macquarie Island, the King penguins are the rarest and most beautiful. They stand up to 30 inches high and have gorgeous gold flushings extending from the head down. The back feathers are a lovely shade of French grey. Mawson Expedition 1911-1913 [picture] /
