Escape the chilly weather this July at the National Library. There will be school holiday workshops, presentations on discoveries in our collections, a look at a new Torres Strait Island musical, pointers on finding young people in the early modern world, and the next Winter Tales event.

  • Moving targets: Finding young people in the early modern world with Professor Nicholas Terpstra
    Tuesday 2 July | 6.00pm to 7.00pm | Free
    Join Professor Nicholas Terpstra as he discusses where we can find youths in the histories of the early modern world and how they might reshape our understanding of this period.
     
  • Tracing aviatrix archives with Dr Jo Langdon
    Thursday 4 July | 12.30pm to 1.30pm | Free
    Join Dr Jo Langdon as she presents a lecture on her 2024 Creative Arts Fellowship research into the lives and records of Australian women pilots, exploring their experiences through new works of poetry.
     
  • Straight from the Strait: In conversation about the Torres Strait Island musical
    Wednesday 17 July | 6.00pm to 7.30pm | Free
    Straight from Strait is an upcoming Torres Strait Island musical about the breaking of a world record. Join Aunty Ruth Ghee, Uncle Luke Captain, Georgia Corowa and Rhianna Patrick as they discuss the details of this performance and why opera was chosen to tell this story.
     
  • School holiday activitiesThursday 18 July and Friday 19 July
    Thursday 18 July 1.00pm – 2.30pm and Friday 19 July 10.00am – 11.30am | $10 per participant
    Join us these school holidays for a creative writing workshop with NLA Publishing children’s author Sarah Luke. Learn how to create the hook to your story and write a climactic scene for your character using historical images. This workshop is targeted at children aged 10 to 12 years of age.
     
  • Meeting Miriam with Celia Craig

    Join Celia Craig as she presents a lecture on her 2024 Creative Arts Fellowship research on the early life of teenage musical virtuoso and synesthete (seeing colour when playing music) Dr Miriam Hyde.
     
  • Winter Tales presents Genevieve Jacobs AM
    Sunday 28 July | 2.00pm to 4.00pm | $20
    Join Genevieve Jacobs AM as she delivers a presentation for The National Foundation for Australian Women and the Australian Women's Archives Program (AWAP). Afternoon tea will follow.
