- Costean cut with a bulldozer exposing the bauxite profile for sampling purposes. The two men in this photograph were early leaders of the Weipa bauxite exploration and mining. The man in the dark blue polo shirt was Jack Springall, who arrived at Weipa Mission to work for Enterprise Exploration Pty Ltd in 1956. Jack and his family had been associated with gold mining on the Batavia (later Wenlock) Gold Field, Cape York Peninsula in the 1930s. During the 1960s, Jack became the first senior mine foreman for Comalco. Jack passed away in 1976. The man in shorts and long socks was Peter McLeod (1921-1991), who was Area Manager for Enterprise Exploration Pty Ltd, Weipa from 1957 until his appointment as the first General Manager - Operations for Comalco at Weipa. He served in that role until 1974. Flight Lieutenant McLeod served as a pilot in the RAAF and with 200 Squadron, RAF in Africa during the Second World War.--Information from researcher.
