Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen speaks about his memories of Queensland landscape and specifically Bethany; his early memories of working as a farmer and a farm contractor and a pioneer land contractor. Sir Joh was born 1911 in New Zealand, the family had moved to Queensland in 1913. His father was an academic, he held a teaching position at Scotts College for a number of years before becoming a Lutheran pastor who chose to work with early pioneers & migrants arriving in Brisbane in the early 20th century.
Sir Joh's recalls his father opened the Lutheran Church, being the first church in the South Burnett district of south-east Queensland over a hundred years ago. Sir Joh's mother and her family had migrated to Australia in 1888 and settled in this area. He talks about life on the family's dairy farm located near Kingaroy, Qld, the scarce resources and hard work; how families became self sufficient to survive as there was no government social security available during those years; the flora and forna ecology on his property at Kingaroy and the measures he took to protect the environment; his land contract work and the processes used before the introduction of the bulldozier; land clearing processes such as cross burning and tree grubbing; his views on the Landcare movement.
