MS 9560 comprises electronic files of Alan Holgate's research into Sir John Monash's engineering and business affairs prior to World War I. The files include notes on the Monash papers held by the National Library at MS 1884, and notes on the files of the Monash & Anderson Partnership and the Reinforced Concrete and Monier Pipe Construction Company held by the University of Melbourne Archives. The collection includes the text of the first edition of Monash bridges, engineering projects, conference papers and articles resulting from the research, and periodic snapshots of Alan Holgate's website (2 folders).
The Acc07.130 instalment comprises one CD-ROM containing research notes by Holgate on the engineering work of Sir John Monash prior to World War I, including material derived from archives at the University of Melbourne, drawings now owned by J. Thomas, modern photographs of extant structures, as well as notes taken from MS 1884 (1 CD-ROM).
The Acc10.154 instalment comprises one DVD containing updated research notes by Holgate on the engineering work of Sir John Monash and the design and aesthetics of civil engineering structures (1 folder).
- Biography/History:

Engineer, academic and author. Alan Holgate was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1937 and attended University College, London where he completed a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree. In 1958, Holgate took up a position with the NSW Department of Main Roads and, between 1962 and 1965, he worked for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority in Eucumbene and Cooma, New South Wales. In 1966, Holgate joined the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University where he undertook teaching and research in the analysis and design of structures. Holgate was professor in the Department of Civil Engineering from 1994 until 1996 when he retired to become an independent scholar. He is the author of several publications including, The art of structural engineering: the work of Jörg Schlaich and his team (1997), Monash bridges: typology study reinforced concrete bridges in Victoria 1897-1917 (with Lesley Alves and Geoff Taplin, 2nd ed., 1998), and, John Monash tanks and silos (2000).
