The papers are comprised of material relating to Makin's career as a parliamentarian in Australia: as a Speaker of the House of Representatives and Minister for the Navy and Munitions and Aircraft Production. Other papers, cuttings and photos relate to his term as Ambassador to the United States and President of the United Nations Security Council and his lifelong participation in Methodist preaching. The folio run includes newspaper cuttings, books, photographs, doctoral robes and degree.

Norman Makin was born on 31st Mar. 1889 at Petersham, N.S.W. He became an Hon. L.L.D. of Syracuse and Ohio Universities. From 1918-1919 he was President of the South Australian Labor Party, and from 1919-1946 was M.H.R. for Hindmarsh, S.A. He is a former Federal President of the Australian Labor Party. In the period from 1929-1931 he was Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the Advisory War Council from 1940, and a member of the War Cabinet. From 1941-1943 he was Minister for Navy and Munitions and from 1943-1946 Minister for Aircraft Production. He served as the first Australian Ambassador to the United States, 1946-1951, and was the first President of the United Nations Security Council. From 1954-1956 he was M.H.R. for Sturt, and from 1956-1963 for Bonython, S.A.
