- Biography/History:
-
Union official, politician, historian and author. Clyde Robert Cameron had a long and influential involvement in the labour movement and Australian Labor Party politics, both through his associations with the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) and the South Australian Branch of the ALP, and through his work as a Federal Labor parliamentarian and minister, and as a writer and commentator. Cameron was active in the AWU and rose to become federal vice-president in 1942-1950 and president of the South Australian Branch in 1956. He was president of the South Australian Branch of the ALP from 1946-1948, 1958-1959 and 1963-1964, and its representative on the Federal Executive of the ALP in 1970-1972. Between 1948 and 1977, he was a South Australian delegate to the ALP federal conferences.
In 1949 Cameron was elected to the House of Representatives as the ALP member for Hindmarsh, Adelaide, and sat in opposition until 1972 when he became Minister for Labour in the Whitlam government. Cameron retired from politics in 1980 and wrote The confessions of Clyde Cameron 1913-1990, and The Cameron diaries, which were published in 1990. He also conducted several oral history interviews for the National Library of Australia. In 1982 Cameron was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to the government and politics, and in 2001 he was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through Parliament.
