- Biography/History:

Barry was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1926. He joined the A.L.P. in 1939 and unsuccessfully stood for the Federal seat of Balaclava in 1943. In 1947 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria and in his early years on the bench specialised in criminal law. He led 2 delegations to United Nations congresses on the prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders. In 1960 he was appointed chairman of the U.N. congress that examined short-term imprisonment. Throughout his career he wrote extensively on criminal law for books and journal articles.
