He speaks of his war years, joining Commonwealth National Library in 1945, work as a cataloguer in Film Section, way of life in Canberra during the late 1940's, move to old National Library Building, Kings Ave. 1946, appointment of John O'Hara as head of Film Section 1947 to build on the historical film collection by developing Film Lending Library of educational and scientific films, documenting Australian history and culture, lack of proper shelving and storage facilities, lack of competent administrators until Fleming, his concern over factions within the Library, commencement of film screenings to parliamentarians in 1947 coinciding with film lending through state film centres, resignation of O'Hara in 1952, Shirley Ward, Dulcie Penfold and Larry Lake, appointment as Head of Film Section in 1956, building archival collection of old Australian films, discovering the musical score to "Soldiers of the Cross", 1957 Paton Report separated film archives from the Library, collecting methods to build the film collections, his views of overseas film libraries, his brush with ASIO, problems in managing the Pictorial Section 1967-1969, start of Maps Section in 1969, his impressions of NLA staff.

Wallace was film librarian and Head of the Film Section, Commonwealth National Library and later under the National Library of Australia from 1956-1966, Coordinator of Special Resources, NLA from 1966-1969, Principal Librarian (Special Collections) from 1969 until his retirement at the age of 61.
