Attributed to Didier Robert de Vaugondy. This map was based on a similar map by Jacques Bellin drawn in 1753 but updated with the latest information and cartographic corrections. Robert de Vaugondy prepared this map to illustrate a lecture by Charles de Brosses, a member of the Académie Royale Des Sciences, but it was also incorporated into a published lecture series on his study of 65 European voyages into the Pacific and entitled Histoire des Navigations aux Terres Australe (Paris, 1756. 2 v.). In his book De Brosses proposed to classify the newly discovered islands into three groups: Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia. James Cook carried with him De Brosses' book (which included de Vaugondy's map) on the Endeavour throughout his first voyage of the Pacific (1768-1771) including his circumnavigation of New Zealand in 1769-1770. Cook was the first to fully chart Australia's east coast and produce a detailed map of that coastline in 1770 (later published in 1773).

- This map of Australasia features a still-unexplored coastline of Nouvelle Hollande [i.e. Australia] with Tasmania joined to the mainland. It also features a hypothetical east coast of Australia. The 'cotes conjecturees' [i.e. imaginary coastlines] join the Terre of P. Nuyts with Terre de Diemen [i.e. Tasmania], continuing upwards along the still-undiscovered east coast to 'Terre du St. Esprit' and finishing at the tip of Carpentaria. The area known as Terre du St. Esprit which was in fact the discovery of the islands of Vanuatu and misinterpreted by its explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606 as part of the Great Southern Land or Australia, a mistake perpetuated in many maps for the next 150 years. Terre des Papos de la Nlle. Guinea [i.e. New Guinea] is correctly shown as a separate island. The map also shows part of Nouvelle Zélande [i.e. New Zealand] with placenames.
