- Biography/History:
-
Teacher, historian and archivist. Arthur Cousins was born at Kiama, New South Wales in 1866 and grew up there and in the nearby district of Jamberoo. In 1881, at the age of 15, he became a probationary pupil teacher at Jamberoo Primary School. He progressed to become teacher and headmaster at various schools throughout New South Wales including at Fort Street, Sydney, in 1887 where his father was a student in 1849. While employed at Neutral Bay Public School he enrolled at the University of Sydney and, in 1911, graduated with an honours degree in history.
Following his retirement from teaching in 1931, Cousins pursued an interest in local history. This resulted in the publication of: The northern rivers of New South Wales (1933), The letters of Michael Hindmarsh of Alne Bank (1945), and a history of the Illawarra region titled, The garden of New South Wales (1948). He undertook work on the war archives of Sydney University and, in 1941, was appointed honorary archivist for the Second World War. Cousins died in Sydney in 1960.
