MS 8583 comprises handwritten drafts, notebooks, early notes and jottings, typescripts, page proofs, research notes, newspaper cuttings and some first editions of Tim Winton's books including, An open swimmer (1982), Shallows (1984), Scission (1985), Minimum of two (1987), That eye the sky (1988), In the winter dark (1988), Cloudstreet (1991), The Riders (1994), Breath (2008), Blueback (2009), The Deep (1999), Dirt Music (2002), Down to Earth with Richard Woldendorp, Land's Edge, The Turning (2004), Rising Water, Shrine (2014), Signs of Life (2013), Eyrie (2013), Leaning on the Wind; and the following books for children, Jesse (1988), The bugalugs bum thief (1991), Lockie Leonard, human torpedo (1993) and Lockie Leonard, Scumbuster (1993). It also includes correspondence with publishers Allen and Unwin and McPhee Gribble from 1981-1996, screenplays, theatrical adaptions, correspondence, media articles and reviews, marketing and publicity, book layouts and designs, photographs and pictures, posters, awards, journals, commemorative stamps, DVD's and CD's as well as records relating to Tim Winton's environmental activism.

Writer. Timothy John (Tim) Winton was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1960. His first book, An open swimmer, was joint winner of the 1981 Vogel Award. Winton won the Miles Franklin Award in 1984 with his second novel, Shallow, and he was finalist for the 1995 Booker Prize with The riders (1994). His other books include Scission, which won the 1985 West Australian Council Week Literary Award, Minimum of two (1987), That eye the sky (1988), In the winter dark (1988), Cloudstreet (1991), Land's edge (1993); and children's books, Jesse (1988), The bugalugs bum thief (1991), Lockie Leonard, human torpedo (1993) and Lockie Leonard, Scumbuster (1993).
