- Summary:
-
Construction of the Jacana Underpass by which the Western Ring Road was to pass beneath Pascoe Vale Road, 4 railway lines and a local road. The unusual construction method involved pre-casting tunnel segments on site, excavating ahead of each segment, then pushing the segments into the cavity with hydraulic rams. The soil depth above the tunnel was only 1 to 3 metres, and the traffic was not diverted.
- Full contents:
-
- 1. Steel reinforcing and pre-cast concreting workshops for south tunnel at Jacana Underpass, looking south-east. Steel frames were assembled in the first bay then moved into the formwork moulds once the leading segment had been pushed into the tunnel
- 2. View from the south tunnel, out through the pre-cast area looking west. Note in upper foreground large rolls of steel used to reduce friction between soil and tops of segments
- 3. Pre-cast workshops for northern tunnel, looking north-west. Leading segment is fully prepared and partially inserted into the tunnel. Southern tunnel has broken through
- 4. Northern tunnel looking west to tunnel face. Each segment can be seen with space between for drainage and expansion
- 5. Central view of West-face of underpass showing completed south tunnel. In the centre is the concrete footing with steel edging on which the segment slid. At left base of segment is the pilot tunnel dug first to lay the footing all the way through
- 6. Breakthrough of northern tunnel, looking east . Shows steel shield and pilot tunnel. Note thinness of soil between tunnel and traffic
- 7. Details of shield on northern tunnel looking south to the completed facing of the south tunnel. North tunnel still requires several metres of jacking
- 8.Western entry looking north-east showing completed south tunnel and formwork in place for final pour of concrete on north tunnel.
