Ross talks firstly about his parents and their involvement in the early socialist movement; leaving high school at 17 to become a journalist; his experiences working on "The Argus"; moving to Broken Hill and his involvement in union activity and the Labor movement and joining the Militant Minority Movement in 1933; how he left Broken Hill in 1935 for Sydney; the papers that he was involved with such as "The Barrier Truth" and "Labor Daily"; his membership of the Communist Party; his visits to the Soviet Union; his view on the future of socialism in Australia.
