Sir Maurice Byers gives his view on the current state of Australia in 1997 and discusses the concept of Federation and compares it with the situation in USA. He then talks about native occupancy claims and the procedure involved in conducting a referendum. Byers then describes his family background; desire to be a barrister from an early age; education at St Aloysius College and his experiences at Sydney University. He then discusses his religious background and beliefs; treatment of minorities within society and his views on the teaching of law. Byers then talks about what was involved in being admitted to the Bar in 1944; role of the Bar Association; views on the justice system and his reasons for declining appointment to Supreme Court. He then discusses his reasons for becoming Solicitor-General in 1973 and the nature of the position.
Byers then gives his views on the Constitution; memories of the loans affair during Whitlam period and the dismissal of the Whitlam government. He then talks about his plans as chairman of the Australian Constitutional Commission and his time on the Police Board.
