MS 8199 comprises: 1. Lectures on literature and fine arts given at the University of Sydney and Leura; 2. Subject files, personal and professional, containing clippings, manuscripts, correspondence, photocopies and printed and roneoed material; 3. Manuscripts on literature and the fine arts; 4. Journals of overseas trips, 1958-1959 and 1966; 5. Correspondence and cards, 1959-1985; 6. Five notebooks; 7. Card indexes to Clarke's collection of books and recorded music (24 boxes, 5 cartons).
MS Acc19.141 comprises handwritten diaries and an address book of Donovan Clarke, the majority of which focus on Clarke's overseas travel, particularly Europe, as well as the United States. Several volumes include other general notes and writings including poetry, notes on Japanese linguistics and reflections on various subjects (4 boxes).
- Biography/History:

Teacher, lecturer, poet and literary critic. Donovan Charles Clarke was born in Bristol, England in 1904. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1958 where his Master of Arts thesis comprised "A critical edition of the letters of Henry Kendall". Clarke's long career included teaching in Sydney and Leura, and writing. He was also a lieutenant in the AIF. As a poet he published two collections of verse, Ritual dance (1940) and Blue prints (1942). He was the author of critical studies and edited Wednesday nights: a creative writing anthology (1963). Clarke died in New South Wales in 1987.
