- Summary:
-
This collection consists of published orchestrations, band arrangements and instrumental music, most of it composed or arranged to accompany silent movies. The music is from the State Theatre's lending collection and was used in their theatre in Sydney and by other film distribution companies throughout Australia, predominantly in the period 1900-1930s. The music in this collection often carries the name-stamps of these companies and this charts the evolution of these music collections within Australia. The collection also includes music up to the 1950s that was performed by the State Theatre orchestra and sometimes associated with 'talking pictures'. Some of the scores and parts include performance annotations and historical information. The collection includes some original Australian material. Some of the music in this collection is associated with the noted Cinesound musical director Hamilton Webber. Manuscript scores and parts for at least two Cinesound features, Orphan of the wilderness and Lovers and luggers, are included in the collection.
