"Herbert Elliott is regarded as the greatest middle distance runner in the history of Australian atheletics. From the age of 15 until his retirement he was never beaten over a mile or 1500m. He won a gold medal in the 1500 metre event, in record time, at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960. He retired at the age of 22 and served on a number of Australian Government committees, mostly in relation to sport" -- acquisitions file.
