Altman, author and academic, talks about his family and his parents' refugee background; growing up in Tasmania and the multilingual character of his family. He then describes his first overseas trip to Vienna at 17; learning languages; impact of WWII on family members and his experiences with anti-semitism. Altman then discusses a seminar he did with Hannah Arendt; studying at Cornell for 2 years and recognising and acknowledging his homosexuality. He then talks about the beginnings of Gay Liberation; writing "Homosexual : oppression and liberation"; participation in a forum on sexual liberation at Sydney University in 1971 with Germaine Greer; writing "The homosexualisation of America". Altman then discusses his personal life and gives his views on monogamy and the differences between gays and lesbians and bisexuality. He then discusses his writing career, writing style and some of his publications.
Altman then talks about his decision to leave Sydney University and go to America. He then provides background on his work, "AIDS in the mind of America"; returning to Australia and his involvement in a number of committees that are concerned with AIDS.
