This report is submitted to the United Nations in accordance with paragraph 297 of the platform for action, which states that governmennts should develop implementation strategies for the platform. This report details Australia's implementation plan, including progress in implementing the commitments announced at the Fourth UN World Conference on Women. The plaform for action is the baseline for what all countries agree defines the status of the world's women. The document provides both a description of the status quo and banchmarks for change. It provides a sound basis for evaluating and reforming each country's domestic policy on the status of women. Australia's government is committed to: (i) reducing substantially the incidence of violence in the community; (ii) encouraging and working towards far greater participation by women in all areas of government and industry; (iii) improving opportunities for women in the workplace; (iv) providing greater freedom of choice for women in balancing work and family responsibilities; (v) implementing its international obligations to women's health and to ensuring that women have access to a high standard of appropriate and effective health care services; (vi) work in partnership with women in Pacific island nations to realise practical gains in the status of women.examina
