- See The Holy City, 1949 and cover. "The sight of the grotto is down a flight of steps over which a permanent guard is in attendance day & night. Two flights of steps, one from the north and one from the south transept, descend to the grotto and meet before the Altar of the Nativity. So far back as the days of Justin Martyr, in the early part of the second century, the place of our Lord's birth was pointed out in 'a certain cave very close to the village'. The church of the Nativity is in the hands of monks of different denominations and, in order to avoid dissension over the ownership and rights of the shrines, a guard is maintained outside the grotto".
