Jones, a public servant, talks about his Catholicism; schooling; reasons for choosing the Commonwealth Public Service; difficulties observed in the community during the Depression; racial diversity at school and his first job as a base grade clerk with the Bankruptcy Court Registry in Brisbane. He then talks about his military experience during WWII and being sent to New Guinea in April 1944. After the War he returned to University to study Economics. Jones then discusses his move to Canberra in 1949 and he talks about the various departments that he worked in from 1951-64. He then explains the role of the Cabinet Secretariat; describes working with Menzies and Gorton; working as a Permanent Head and working with Malcolm Fraser. Jones then discusses the establishment of a program to teach Aboriginal children in the vernacular during the early years of their education.
He then talks about working with Kim Beazley; events in Education under Whitlam such as the Karmel Committee and its recommendations and the nature, structure and role of the Schools Commission and various reviews of the Education system. Jones then gives his views on the relationship between the Head of Dept and his Minister; his own relationships with individual ministers and the background to his appointment to Administrative Services. He then discusses the issue of religion in the Public Service and the changes that he has seen in education in Australia.
