When Shackleton realised that there was insufficient room on the Nimrod to stow sufficient coal to make a return journey to the Antarctic, he appealed to the N.Z. Government for assistance. They paid for half the Koonya's costs, with the Steamship company absorbing the rest."--Accompanying notes.
