Brown speaks of how his family settled Milawa, his father's approach to winemaking, the role of Victorian Govt. viticulturalists Fideli, Bragato and Francois De Castella, the impact in the 1930's of migrant Italians' demand for table wine on Brown Brothers, the control of phylloxera until early this century when resistant vines were introduced, joined his father in the winery in 1933, the wine families of Rutherglen, the impact of the Depression and war years on the vineyard, how he was educated in winetasting, the development of their 1978 Botrytis Riesling, lack of winemaking courses, the need to eliminate oxidation in winemaking, how he upgraded the technology on the vineyard, how Brown Bros. developed a distinct style from the Rutherglen families, how he promoted his wines into restaurants, his view of the Viticulture Club, his first trip to Europe in 1967 to inspect wineries and later in 1973 a similar trip to California, sending his four sons overseas to study winemaking.
Brown discusses the changes in the Australian wine industry including the increased demand for wine, problems in exporting our wines, how his sons joined the family business, reasons for expanding the business, how he ensures a large variety of grapes supplied and why north Italian grape varieties are preferred, substituting French regional names with varietal names for his wines, the problem with birds, the importance of the wine show circuit with international judges, people in the wine industry who have influenced his life, advising the public on establishing a vineyard, importance of public relations, his private cellar, his philosophy of life, important events in his life, making his son John C.E.O. of the company.
