The collection contains papers relating to Mr Penfold's research in chemistry and his work as Director of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. They include a large amount of correspondence, notes, journal articles, newpaper clippings and photographs. The correspondents include G.R.M. Garrat, R.H. Hamblin, J.L. Willis, F.V. Wells, J.E. Hartill, Dr Ernest Guenther, F.P. Buckley, William Ricketts, J. Clunie Ross, L.H. Pryor, W.R. Littlejohn, and T.S. Skillman. The notes and articles pertain to natural oils, eucalypts, wool, plastics and others aspects of chemistry. The collection also includes papers relating to A.R. Penfold's visit to China in 1956. It includes correspondence with C.P. Fitzgerald, his wife Eunice Penfold, and the Chinese People's Association for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. Also includes notebooks, typed notes, a report on his visit to China, journal articles, theatre programs, postcards, other miscellaneous items from China, photographs of Canberra in the 1920s and letters from Lorna Mary Gardner to her mother written during the former visit to Europe in 1914-1915.
- Biography/History:

Mr A.R. Penfold worked as a research chemist between 1910 and 1920. Between 1927 and 1955 he was director of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences of N.S.W. He also held positions in the Royal Society of N.S.W.; the Art Gallery & Museums Association of Australia & New Zealand and the Plastics Institute of Australia. His publications include "Eucalypts" and over a hundred papers on the chemistry of Australian essential oils. In 1956 he visited China as a member of an unofficial Australian cultural delegation headed by Professor C.P. Fitzgerald.
