Folkloric recording: Jim Lowe discusses the folk music and songs of the Backwater Region, N.S.W. REEL 2720/41/34. Music: - 1. Unidentified (one-step tune; whistling then lilting). 2. Conversation: How a Welsh miner put in a tunnel between Backwater and Glencoe, talks about his friend Angelo Pappalus, guns and knives and bayonets, making money at Backwater but in fact no-one did though some did better reworking the Chinese diggings, how Tom Lowe (uncle) worked for Premier Jack Lang in Sydney, how he got lucky striking tin later sold in Glen Innes, how he never belonged to a union, recalls old time wages on a dredge, the difficulty in comparing wage with mining, wages for ringbarking, how wages were spent and spending sprees, no underground mines at Backwater - only at Kingsgate which had good safety record, how his uncle Ted had worked there, why there was no talk of socialism at Backwater and the reasons he rejected it, recalls squatters like Colonel White of Bald Blair and Billy Bracken & Jack Light, how families of mining accident victims were compensated, women involved in mining - his own mother, Mrs. Cosgrove, Granny Hibberd all good miners, how he himself started mining at age 7, how mining tools were sharpened, how he liked axe and shovel work, discusses the best kind of knives.
