- Summary:

1) 11 v. of diaries, 1837-64 (less 1849-56). Describe places he visited and his work in Australia and New Zealand. 2) Letters to Crawford 1840-75, about family and business and building activity in New Zealand, the Fitzroy mines and the Richmond Hill silver mine, Vic. Correspondents include Capt. Wm Loring, J.C. Bidwell, B.W. Mountfort. 3) MSS entitled 'Drafts for book Australia Section 1838-9' and 'Reminiscences, perhaps drafts for New Zealand Section of book'. These drafts give fuller descriptions than corresponding chapters in his book, "Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia". 4) Sketchbook of a journey up the Wanganui River, depicting Maoris, settlements and landscapes and a collection of watercolours and drawings of Australia and New Zealand. Subjects include Glebe 1844-49, and other parts of Sydney, Eton Vale, Qld., Mount Egmont and Taranaki, N.Z.
- Biography/History:

Explorer and settler. Crawford arrived in Sydney in Oct. 1838 and overlanded cattle to Adelaide. He went to New Zealand in 1839, then returned to England. In 1845 he rented "Forest Lodge", Sydney and purchased "Eton Vale", Darling Downs, Qld., in partnership with Sir Arthur Hodgson. 1847-48 he observed geological structures throughout N.S.W. and in 1862 made a geological survey of Wellington Province, N.Z. He settled at Miraman in N.Z. and was an M.L.C., magistrate and sheriff at Wellington.
