Book trade prospectus for a work which was never published. A two column extract, "expressive of the general character of the Book and temperament of the author" is headed "Introductory lines." The first two lines read: "How grand are the conceptions of well ordered minds that shake / Off prejudices as men do their dreams when they awake." Below the extract additional information indicates: "The Work will contain 144 Pages, 12mos, price Five Shillings per copy. The author will not feel justified in incurring the expenses of publication until Five Hundred Copies shall have been ordered by bona fide Subscribers." Chris Vening, 'William Martin Leggett: The "Bard of New Brunswick" in Australia,' Script & Print, volume 40, no. 4 (2016), page 206 suggests this "rambling" epic was apparently never finished; evidently this prospectus did not attract sufficient support to justify publication.
- Biography/History:
-
William Martin Leggett was born on 15 Dec 1808, probably in New York City, and raised in New Brunswick, where he began publishing poetry at a young age and was hailed as "The Bard of New Brunswick." In 1845 he left New Brunswick for England to pursue a literary career, and effectively disappeared from Canadian eyes. Recent research reveals he changed his name to William Alonzo Campbell, joined the British Army, and in 1848 was went to Sydney, where he soon resumed publishing poetry, usually under a variety of pseudonyms, worked in a variety of jobs, remarried (apparently bigamously) and changed his name again to Williams Montague Clarence Campbell. He died on 25 April 1878, aged 70, at Lordsland on the South Coast of New South Wales. See Chris Vening, 'William Martin Leggett: The "Bard of New Brunswick" in Australia,' Script & Print, volume 40, no. 4 (2016), pages 199-221.
