Subjects of correspondence include recruiting in Ireland 1918; command of the A.I.F. 1918; impressions of the Dutch in Java, the Malay States and the Straits Settlements; the British claim to German colonies 1918; the coal strike in New Zealand; the Labor Party; conscription referendums; trade; the Irish in New Zealand and Australia; the Pacific Islands; Transcontinental railway; land settlement in New Zealand; Hobart's defences; the German influence in Fiji; and on tax and trade. The 1917 Imperial War Conference is the subject of many papers. There are many letters to and from W.M. Hughes.

Walter Hume Long, 1st Viscount Long of Wraxall was Secretary of State for the Colonies Dec. 1916-Jan. 1919, and First Lord of the Admiralty 1919-21.
