Doreen speaks about being removed at age 6 with her four brothers by police while their parents were away working on a cattle station. Her father was a white station worker, and both parents were from the Burketown area. Her mother's language was Gungalida. The five children were taken to Mornington Island Mission, Qld. where her sister had already been sent and Doreen stayed there until age 14. She describes the living conditions at the Mission. Doreen describes conditions at Doomadgee Mission where she was sent at age 16. She remained at Doomadgee until age 21, and later married and was sent to work on a sheep station.
John speaks of his father who was brought to Mapoon Mission as a child and his mother who was part-Filipino or Indian. She had been brought from Cowel Creek Mission and was one of the Yunpungatti people. John left at age 15 to work on a cattle station and he states that he never received all of his wages as they were controlled by the local Protector of Aborigines.
