MS 3538 comprises letters written by A.K. Murray to John A. Ferguson between April 1925 and June 1927, and a few postcards, when Murray ran Canberra's first newspaper. The collection also comprises numerous newspaper cuttings, mainly from The Sydney morning herald, on the subject of Canberra, its establishment, early buildings, official opening of Federal Parliament, etc. Biographical news cuttings refer to John Gale, Colonel Percy Owen and T.C.G. Weston amongst others.
Other material includes a typescript by John Gale inscribed to Ferguson; photographs; poems; programmes for annual school sports days in 1925 and 1926, the Capitol Theatre for 30 April, 1933 and 11 January, 1934, and a Canberra Burns Club concert held in 1926; copy of the score "Dawn of the capital" by Ormond R. Bulmer (1927); and issues of Millions magazine (vol. 1, no. 4, Sept. 1, 1919) and The Federal capital pioneer (Aug. 20, 1926) (1 box).

Newspaper editor and proprietor. Alexander Kenneth Murray was the founder of Canberra's first newspaper, The Federal capital pioneer. Murray's newspaper commenced publication in December 1924 and, after a change of title to Federal capital pioneer magazine, ceased in August 1927. In December 1927 ownership of the journal passed to Federal Capital Press of Australia Ltd.
