Chapter two provides an overview of the settlement of Tasmania by Europeans; the Aborigines and removal to Flinders Island; initiation, courtship and marriage customs.
"The object of this book, which is written in a particularly lucid style, is to put forward an explanation of the many peculiar featuures which have characterised the relations of men and women at all times. Mr Besterman suggests that men have a deep-lying fear of women, resulting in a profound antagonism between the sexes. This suggestion is illustrated by a series of detailed studies of the sexual lives of primitive, savage, semi-civilised, archaic, classical, Christian and modern men and women, followed by an explanation of the facts under the headings of Continence and Chastity, Sexual Separation and Taboo, and Marriage and Sexual Taboo."
