Theatre director. Richard Bruce Wherrett was born in Sydney in 1940 and graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney in 1961. Wherrett worked as a tutor in London in the 1960s, and after his return to Australia became associate director of the Old Tote Theatre Company, 1970-1972, and then artistic director of Nimrod Theatre Company, 1974-1979. He became founding director of Sydney Theatre Company and directed numerous plays and musicals during his association with the Company from 1979 to 1991. He was a member of the Australia Council Theatre Board, 1985-1987, and a Performing Arts Board member from 1987 to 1988. He was artistic director of the Melbourne International Festival of Arts, 1992-1993.
In 1977, Wherrett won the Sydney Critics' Circle Award for best director for "The elocution of Benjamin Franklin", and in 1986 he won Melbourne's Green Room Award for directing "The life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby". In 1984, Wherrett was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to theatre as a producer and director. Wherrett published two autobiographical works, Desirelines: an unusual family memoir (with brother Peter Wherrett, 1997), and The floor of heaven: my life in theatre (2000). Wherrett died in 2001. He is commemorated by the Richard Wherrett Prize supported by the Australian Writers' Guild.
