Melbourne born Mary Cecil Allen (known as Cecil Allen in the U.S.A.) was a painter of landscapes and portraits as well as a writer and lecturer on art. She arranged the first exhibition of Australian art in New York at the Roerich Museum in 1930. Although she lived in the United States from 1926 until her death in 1962 she returned to Australia on a number of occasions to hold exhibitions in Melbourne.
