The papers document Newton's role as a financial writer, mainly covering the period from 1980 onwards after Newton moved to New York. The papers cover Newton's role as a financial writer for the New York Post and as an adviser to bankers, sharebrokers and politicians as well as a prolific publicist and columnist. Also included are diaries, correspondence, faxes, cutting books, photographs, audio cassettes, videos, newsletters and magazines. Correspondents include Larry Henry, Paul Weaver, Ned Chase, Scott Ivey, Sir Charles Court, Frank Devine, James Blanchard, Mark Levit, H.W. Arndt, Graham Dyer, Elizabeth Currier, Greg Copley, G. Jurkowich, Malcolm Forbes, J.V. Deaver and Milton Friedman.

Economist and journalist. Newton was educated at the University of Western Australia and later at Cambridge. He worked as a a financial journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Financial Review and the New York Post.
