- Summary:
-
This small plaster bust, mounted on a teak plinth, is thought to have been made in Manila about 1770, at the same time as of his father. It depicts a young man of 25, standing at the threshold of a commercial career that was not to be as successful as that of his father.
- Biography/History:
-
Simao d'Araujo Rosa was the eldest son of Simao Vicente d'Araujo da Rosa, a merchant prince of mid-18th century Macau. He carried on his father's business on the latter's death in 1773, but did not participate in the growing trade between Calcutta and Macau, confining his trade to dealings in Bangkok and Goa. It is therefore likely that the trade boom of the next half century passed him by. He married Marianna Lopes da Silva. Their son, Simao Vicente da Rosa who married Ana Joaquina Roza Pereira Braga, adopted his wife's family name, Braga. This may be in reaction to his father's lack of business success. He was the great-great grandfather of Jack Braga -- Information derived from a note by J. M. Braga, MS 4300, Series 7, folder 94.
