Dulcie Penfold, retired librarian, recalls her family background; career as a librarian; working at the State Library; role as secretary to the State Librarian; travelling overseas during the war; working for Canterbury Municipal Library; graduating in Economics before joining the National Library of Australia; career in the National Library; ACT Library Service; founding of the ACT mobile library; the film division; London liaison office; New York liaison office; contributions of Directors-General Harold White, Allan Fleming and George Chandler; the opening of the new National Library building in 1968.

Dulcie Penfold, born in Sydney, has had a distinguished career as a librarian, working in the State, local government and national spheres. She worked at the State Library of New South Wales from 1935-1946, and in her latter years there was secretary to the State Librarian. From 1946 to 1948 she was assistant librarian of Canterbury Municipal Library. In 1949 she moved to the National Library of Australia in Canberra, remaining there until her retirement in 1977. During her time at the National Library she worked in many areas including public library services throughout the ACT; the Library's film division; the liaison offices in London and New York; and Resources, Organisation and Policy Branch (Director). Dulcie Penfold received an MBE for her library work in 1976.
