Folkloric recording. Denis Kevans discusses his family history and familial relationships; his upbringing in Canberra and Sydney; attending university but dropping out of medicine; moving to Canberra and working for External affairs (1958); how the human voice has always been very important to him and how it formed an integral part of his upbringing; the stories and songs of the wharfies in Sydney and laments how many of these are now lost; his interest in politics; how Lenin was an interesting figure, however he could never reconcile these with Stalinist ideals; how communism was a positive thing as it fostered a positive community; performing at lunchtimes in factories with others; being linked with the communist party and the ‘realist writers’; John Meredith; Vietnam War; Indigenous sacred sites; Helen Boyle; influences on his life; his interest in the tradition of folklore amongst returned soldiers and the poetry he has collected from the AIF; writing two songs about the Green Bans and Jack Mundy; the work of Bob and Marg Fagan.
