- Biography/History:
-
Writer. Russell Reading Braddon was born in Sydney in 1921 and educated at the University of Sydney. In 1940, he joined the AIF and, in 1942, was captured at the fall of Singapore. He was imprisoned for the following four years at Changi and on the Burma-Thailand railway. Braddon described his experiences as a prisoner of war in what is his best known work, The naked island, published in 1951. Later he wrote biographies, including that of Joan Sutherland, as well as novels, articles, books on history and television scripts. He was a prolific author who wrote on many topics, only some of them Australian, and was widely translated. Braddon was a broadcaster on radio and television, too. He lived in Britain from 1949 until 1993, and died in New South Wales in 1995.
