The collection includes photographs, correspondence and writings of C.S.H.'s father George Hicks, a journalist. There is correspondence from most periods in Sir Stanton's life, a great deal of material in connection with the Catering Corps of the Australian Army, and nutrition in general, many published scientific articles, research material relating to land reform in Italy, lectures and speeches and personal documents such as bank statements and bills. An autobiographical memoir, 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor" was added in 2001.

Born at Mosgiel, Otago, New Zealand, 2 June 1892, Hicks became a famous physiologist and pharmacologist. He was responsible for scientific reform of food preparation for the Australian Army during World War II having moved to Australia in 1926 to take up the Chair of Human Physiology and Pharmacology at Adelaide University, a position he held until 1958.
