Betty Scanlon, born at West Wylong, N.S.W. recalls her family background; her father, born in Tasmania, a lighthorseman in WWI, who settled his family on a soldier settlement plot near West Wylong; her mother, who raised 10 children, Betty being the eldest; memories of her childhood, hardships faced on the farm; family's move to Hillston (1926); her early Catholic schooling; tensions between the religious denominations in the community; school rituals and games; family entertainment, singing; father's family life; leaving school at 14 years of age to help her mother with running the large household; her first job at 18 years of age in the general store at Hillston selling manchester for 10 years; how she met Ray; her interests in dancing from an early age, making her debut at 17 years of age and still dancing today; the local dance groups, musicians (Reko's Band) and dance music played. Ray Scanlon, born at Hillston recalls his father, Richard's background, a carpenter born at Lockhart, N.S.W.(1904) who had built many of the buildings in Hillston; his family's move to the nearby town of Merriwagga, N.S.W. during the Depression.
Ray speaks about family life during the Depression; carting wheat, describing the whip elevator method of using horses to lift wheat; bullocks carting wheat to the railhead at Merriwagga; Chinese Burr; father's work as a bootmaker and undertaker; his father's musical talents; his early education at Merriwagga and Griffith, leaving school before his 15th birthday; seasonal work in the Griffith area and helping father build houses (mid 1940s); his painting and carpentary training; marriage to Betty; his work as a baker at Bowral (1953) and then in Hillston (1954); setting up a trucking business with 1 new truck and 1 semi trailer contracted to cart fuel from Melbourne; buying the newsagency at Hillston and running the local school bus (Paradise (ie a farm) to Hillston route) (mid 1960s); family's move to Queanbeyan, N.S.W.( early 1970s), being employed as an engineer at the Queanbeyan Hospital; eventual return to Hillston (late 1970s); writing the history of Merriwagga; stories of his grandmother living in tents at Mount Hope, N.S.W. (a small copper mining town,late 19th century-early 20th century), drays for wood for miners, painting the pub at Mount Hope, Mount Hope ball.
