The interview covers the final stages of Pat Dodson's family history recorded in his biography titled 'Paddy's Road' written by Kevin Keefe. Patrick Dodson, Aboriginal Australian leader, speaks about family members of past generations living in the east Kimberley region (W.A.) dating back to the late 19th century; stories of noted Aboriginals living further into the Fitzroy Valley region of the Northern Territory at the turn of the 20th century; laws by which the Protector of Native Affairs in Western Australia dominated the affairs of Aboriginal people throughout the early part of the 20th century; White Australia Policy; plight of Aboriginal workers on pastoral properties; his parents struggle against racist treatment of Aboriginal people within local communities; death of both his parents in tragic circumstances; his secondary schooling at the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart College in Hamilton, Vic.; past governments policy of assimilation; examples of what he views as underlying threads of apartheid practiced whithin Australian society.
Dodson speaks about his initial interest in medicine as a career, then making the decision to join the priesthood; being ordained in 1975 as the first Aboriginal Catholic priest; his disillusionment with the conservatism of the Church and his departure from the priesthood around 1980; his role as Founding Chair, Central Land Council which covered the central Australian region; his position as a Royal Commissioner into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody; his role as Chairman, Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (Sept. 1991-Nov. 1997) & the Council's program; the Mabo (Native Title Act 1993) & the Wik judgements (Native Title Amendment Act 1998) handed down by the High Court of Australia & the political ramifications; his views on the reconciliation process, the need for it to be incorporated into the legal framework (i.e. the Constitution) of Australian society as well governments adopting the practical recommendations for recognising the rights of Indigenous Australians & raising their standards of living.
