Twenty-three watercolours comprising selections from a folder labelled 'Portfolio 4118 Tasmania aborigines'. They comprise drawings and paintings of Tasmanian aborigines by Thomas Bock and Robert Dowling and a painting by Benjamin Duterreau, also of a Tasmanian aborigine.
- Biography/History:

Thomas Bock was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1823 and was granted a full pardon in 1833. He operated a gallery in Hobart and was the first portrait painter to practice professionally in Tasmania. As well as painting portraits of many well-known residents of Hobart he also did a series of studies of aborigines for Lady Franklin. These portraits of the Tasmanian aborigines are of considerable anthropological importance as they provide rare details of a unique people.
