Writer: Born in Sydney, elder brother of Edmund Barton, first editor of "Sydney Punch". 1865-1868 was Reader in English literature, Univ. of Sydney. Spent some years in New Zealand, editor of "Otago Daily Times" and as barrister and solicitor. Returned to Sydney in the 80s and wrote for "Evening News" and "Sydney Morning Herald." Commissioned to write "History of New South Wales" from the Records, but only completed first volume.
