Kiley speaks of his birth in England, how his father worked on Kinchega Station near Broken Hill, the rabbitting industry at the time, his first job on Stewart's Creek Station near Roma in 1952, his brother Barry who was a drover rode for Tex Morton and his travelling show, working racehorses at Bourke, horse breaking, Tom Medley and his full blood Aboriginal mate Louis, full blood Aboriginal Les Thompson from Nockatunga and his scars from being beaten as a young man, the care and neglect of horses and his observation that most Aboriginals were "horse killers", the sheep versus cattle conflicts that occurred around Roma, finding old percussion firearms at Stewart's Creek which was the scene for "blackfeller fights", writing his poems and songs, learning to play guitar, winning the 1985 Heritage Award at Tamworth with his song "When the big mobs came to Bourke", how his song "Mates" was beaten by John Williamson for 1985 Best Composition Award, his description of Bourke as a drover's town and how some Aboriginal drovers would stop at Hungerford because of their unfamiliar association with "big" places like Bourke.
