MS 597 comprises papers collected by the library of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, USA. The collection includes photographs, press clippings, an index of circulating letters, roneod publications of the Presbyterian Mission Library, a miscellaneous notebook of John R. Morris, notebook in Chinese, scripture text cards in the Chinese language, correspondence and other papers relating to Rev. J.S. McIlvaine, notebooks of D.B. McCartee, and mission diaries from Korea and China (2 boxes, 1 fol. item).

Reverend Jasper Scudder McIlvaine was an American pioneer Protestant missionary in China. McIlvaine was born on 21 May, 1844 at Ewing, New Jersey, in the United States. He graduated from Princeton College in 1863 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1868. McIlvaine was ordained as a foreign missionary and arrived in Peking in 1868 where he stayed until 1871. In China, McIlvaine's mission work involved founding two mission stations in the province of Shantung, in 1871 and 1877. McIlvaine died at Chinan Nan Fou on 2 February, 1881, of acute pneumonia.
