- Biography/History:
-
John Grant was an educated convict and minor poet who arrived in New South Wales in 1804 on the Coromandel. Despite his privileged treatment he chose to express public criticism of Governor King, his officials and the convict system. As punishment he was deported to Norfolk Island. Subdued, he returned to Sydney in 1808 and became a Chaplain at Newcastle. In 1811 he was pardoned by Governor Macquarie and returned to England.
