This book was written just after the conclusion of Australia's most critical years, when John Curtin expended himself in a way that contributed in no small measure to his untimely death. He was a very great Australian and the friend of every Australian writer; it is fitting that this - the only book so far written about him, should repose among the books of men and women for whom he did so much" (1st copy) and "Someday, when the events since December 1941 can be viewed from a more aloof perspective than is possible today, another biography of John Curtin will be written, a more comprehensive and intimately detailed biography than this one. For the needs of today, however, I believe that a concise and easily readable book was necessary to underline the work of an Australian leader under whose wise guidance we ahev seen the birth of a new Australian consciousness ..."
