- Biography/History:
-
Callaghan Baird "Pat" Walsh was born in North Queensland in 1898. In Dec. 1917 at age 19, he enlisted in the 5th Light Horse Regiment, AIF and fought in Palestine before returning home in April 1919. In May he joined the Queensland Forest Service as a chainman. In 1926 he was appointed as a chainman in Wau (PNG) and within a year, was the Medical Assistant at Madang. In 1938-1939 Pat Walsh was the medical assistant on the Hagen-Sepik Patrol. Led by Jim Taylor (MS 9218), the Hagen-Sepik Patrol travelled from Mt. Hagen to the Dutch New Guinea border and was, at the time, the longest patrol in PNG history. While Walsh's own records were lost in the 1974 Brisbane Flood, these papers and photographs were preserved amongst the records of other members of the Hagen-Sepik Patrol.
